Ways to Use “Love” Word in Chinese

愛人如己
Love your neighbor as yourself.

It is the phrase in the Bible that probably best expresses the Chinese saying “愛人如己” (ai4 ren2 ru2 ji3)” if we translate it directly, it means to love a person as oneself.

The word” 人” (ren2) means other people, and the word” 己” (ji3) implies self. So, it is saying that treating other people with the same respect as yourself.

愛你就像愛自己一樣
I love you the way I love myself.

In Chinese, we may say that loving someone is like loving yourself.

Those who could say “I love you just like loving myself” should be capable of self-love and feel content about themselves. When someone tells the other person that they love you as much as themselves, it must be a mutual pleasure.

The most important thing is that people like themselves do not sacrifice their happiness and joy to please others.

Although everyone’s standard of self-love may be different, since we say that “loving you is the same as loving myself,” the love we give to each other should not be lower than the level to ourselves. It should be an equal and pleasant relationship. Remember to treat yourself nice and not let the other person forget the duty easily. : )

自愛
Self-respect

The love word mentioned here is not exactly the level of treating oneself or the other person with kindness, but more often than that. It stands for self-respect, self-demand, or self-regard.

Adults or authorities like to use “自愛” to conduct children or subordinates to behave themselves in a specified way. So, the meaning has a subtle difference in what situation to say this phrase.
